It's not so much about the Indian chief, but is a commentary on the disappearance of a way of life. The way Indians used to live - off the land and its riches on the vastness of the plains. It is a lament for all things lost from a civilization and for the disappearance of the spirit and nature worshiping religion that accompanied that way of life. It is a sad, but true, depiction of the emotional loss of an ethos that we could heed in today's world.
