A few questions about painting my truck?

I have a 1985 Ford Bronco II and my paint is chipping, scratches, and fading away and has A LOT of oxidation.....so this summer Im wanting to paint it. so what should I do first can I just spray self etching primer and just start sanding? will that get rid of all my scratches and chips? Im lost and just need some guidance on how to start this. Also is spray can primer from duplicolor okay to use? I want a nice good finish
